Changes to contacting ECG techs - RE: Accessing ECG Services at JPCH - EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 3, 2025
Non-Invasive Cardiology is currently using a hybrid model (Pager and Vocera) for communication to access ECG services at RUH / JPCH. We have had a positive experience with Vocera use at Emergency and will be moving forward with Vocera only for all of JPCH.
Connecting with an ECG Technologist can be achieved through the following:
• SHA VOIP Phone - Dial 0202
• Cell Phone – Dial (306) 655-0202
• Calling the ECG Technologist Position using the Vocera badge
Vocera badges will be assigned to a role using the following naming:
• ED ECG – ECG services to Adult and Peds Emergency – Using one of the contact methods above when prompted say “ED ECG”
• JPCH (all units / areas) - Using one of the contact methods above when prompted:
o 0800-16:15 Monday to Friday say “JPCH ECG”
o 16:15-08:00 Monday to Friday, Saturday, Sunday and stats (24 hours) say “ED ECG”

PIPD Update Jan 17, 2025

Effective Monday January 13th

Parking Services is implementing a new prox card access reader to the Lot 15 & Stadium parkade park & ride shuttles. This means every employee will have to scan their SHA prox card when boarding the shuttle.

Any employee who is not authorized to use the park & ride service will have their prox card signal the shuttle driver accordingly.

Car-Poolers – Park & ride users can register a maximum of TWO (2) car-poolers at no cost. Contact the parking office to register car-poolers.

-          Car-poolers must be SHA team members (including SCC employees, CoM, etc)

-          Car-poolers need to have their prox card registered with parking services by park & ride user

-          Car-poolers MUST SCAN their prox card IMMEDIATELY AFTER the registered park & ride user when boarding shuttle.

Beginning January 27th (2 weeks after implementation), any employee who is not authorized to board the park & ride shuttle will not be permitted to ride and will be asked to exit the shuttle. Parking Services will be able to see all prox card attempts on the system and any employee who scans their card and is not authorized to use the park & ride service will be contacted individually.

If your prox card signals invalid and you do pay for the park & ride service then please contact the parking office to have corrected.

Any questions can be directed to parkingnorth@saskhealthauthority.ca

RN Staff Leveling
How it works:

Target ahead of any given shift is as follows:
Level 3: Charge RN = require 3/ shift
Level 2: Chemo RN = require 7/ shift
Level 1: Basic RN – fill to baseline

A level 3 RN can apply to all shifts, a level 2 RN can apply to both level 2 and level 1, and a basic RN can only apply to a level 1 shift.

For the same or next shift the staff mix will be more determined by census and patient needs meaning minimum targets might not always be applicable.

Impacts on you
Given there are a minimum number of level 2 and 3 per shift it will impact how you trade and do name replacements as they will be denied if it doesn’t meet the minimum requirement. As a Level 2 or Level 3 RN you have to be cognizant of who you are trading or doing a named replacement with to ensure you are not going to short the unit of the skills required for safety. If staff scheduling denies by error please let us know. Exceptions can be made for staff if we don’t have chemo going or our acuity is low, managers can approve a trade or LOA.

The plan has only been in place for a couple of months and we are still trying these numbers as our starting point. We are flexible and open to feedback.

Pediatric Pharmacy clinical service hours update - effective Feb 3rd. Currently clinical services are provided on inpatient pediatrics by P1 and P2 pharmacists with hours of 0730-1600 and 0900-1730 respectively. Starting Feb 3rd P2 hours will be shifting to earlier in the day with both staff now operating at 0730-1600

New equipment

  • we have put out a bunch of new diaper scales this week.
  • there are 3 new parent sleep chairs (off-green) that are dedicated for the surge rooms 2331, 2337, playroom.

CNE Updates

Salbutamol (Ventolin) NEBS - are in very short supply with a backorder. Wherever possible, the patient should convert or have MDI dosing. This information was also sent to physicians. If questions or concerns occur for patient care, please call our Peds Pharmacy team members.

Please let us know of any other product that needs an increase in the amount stocked on our unit. It may take a bit for the system to complete but it will happen!

PIPD Update Jan 10, 2025

Kudos

(from a parent) I just want to thank your team for taking such good care of my child during her hospital stay over the holidays. They all have an excellent bedside manner. I admire their professionalism, as they continuously demonstrated  patience and caring while remaining very organized and attentive. Their dedication while working through the holidays – not being with their own families, and working in a difficult environment where Peds was over-capacity, could not have been easy – but they did not let that affect the care they provided.

Manager Update - Lynette Koroscil joined the PIPD team this week as co-manager along with Jon. If you missed Fiona's message to the staff from Tuesday last week, she has taken on managing one of the outpatient portfolios and due to the timing of the change with holidays, the move happened quickly. Lynette has been the temporary manager in CES for the past year.

CNE Updates

We have started the 1st orientation group of 2025! You will see 4 new faces on the unit soon.

Hospital Acquired Infections - we've had several hospital acquired RSV infection cases attributed to our unit this week. Some reminders to think about.

Strict adherence to proper hand hygiene – 4 moments of hand hygiene

·        Minimize clutter throughout the unit and nursing stations, including patient rooms- surfaces CANNOT be disinfected if they are full of clutter

-          Keep patient room and PPE carts clear of clutter and drawers closed.

·         Staff must perform hand hygiene prior to entering PPE carts –

-          Access PPE carts with CLEAN HANDS ONLY. Organisms can survive on cloth and other surfaces, accessing the PPE cart with dirty hands can contaminate supplies (ie bags of clean PPE gowns). It was noted during previous hand hygiene audits that some staff are not performing hand hygiene prior to donning PPE and are therefore, potentially contaminating the PPE supplies.

-          Clean supplies should NOT be on the floor (ie gowns hanging out of PPE carts on the floor, BP supplies on the floor, etc)

·       Nursing work/procedure black tables in patient rooms must cleared and disinfected q shift.  (If using blue pads they must be changed q shift)

Ensure symptom and ARO screening on every admissions.

·       Ensure staff ONLY have access to patient Kanban supply cupboards (remind staff that hand hygiene must be done prior to accessing Kanban cupboards).

PIPD Update Jan 3, 2025

 CNE Updates

🎉 Happy New Year! 🎉

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and are ready for 2025!

Amoxicillin/Clavulanate - We have updated the cheat sheet for Amox/Clav calculation. We hope this simplified version makes it easier for you. It has been added to the Red IV Binder in each med room. You can always find it on the S-Drive 🠚 Pediatrics- Acute Care 🠚 Q-Cards - nursing 🠚 AmoxicillinClavulanate 1000mg and 200mg sample calculation

PTT & INR ordering - remember that when an order for a PTT is written, you need to req it as "APTT". If you do just "Prothrombin Time (PT) - INR" that is only an INR. We have had numerous re-pokes on children because a PTT was not drawn.

Chemotherapy drugs used for non-cancer treatment - If a patient has a chemotherapy drug, even for a non-cancer reason (CMV), it is still to be treated like a chemotherapy drug. A chemo certified RN must administer it, follows all safety checks like normal (2 chemo certified RNs double check med, PPE, handling drug, Equashield, and bodily fluids/waste). Please review policy: POLICY #1180 - SHR Chemotherapy Drugs for NON-Cancer Treatment - Administration and Precautions

Chemotherapy - Please leave chemotherapy in its transport bag. Do the safety checks with the drug in the bag, then take the bag to the patient's room.
Place the closed bag onto the black nursing table.
Open the bag, leaving the medication in the bag.
Put the female equashield onto your secondary tubing and spike the chemotherapy bag while it is laying flat on the black nursing table and still in the transport bag.
Once spiked, you may now remove the drug from the transport bag and hang onto the pole.
SHA Preceptor Education Monthly Draw - How to be entered into the draw:
  • Complete a module of the Preceptor Education Program (PEP)
  • If you completed the Preceptor Workshop offered by the schools
  • If you completed the International Educated Nurse workshop, this certificate can also be entered
Monthly draws will start April 1, 2024 until March 31, 2025. If you completed any modules between March 1-31, 2024 they will still be entered.
