PIPD Update Jan 10, 2025

Kudos

(from a parent) I just want to thank your team for taking such good care of my child during her hospital stay over the holidays. They all have an excellent bedside manner. I admire their professionalism, as they continuously demonstrated  patience and caring while remaining very organized and attentive. Their dedication while working through the holidays – not being with their own families, and working in a difficult environment where Peds was over-capacity, could not have been easy – but they did not let that affect the care they provided.

Manager Update - Lynette Koroscil joined the PIPD team this week as co-manager along with Jon. If you missed Fiona's message to the staff from Tuesday last week, she has taken on managing one of the outpatient portfolios and due to the timing of the change with holidays, the move happened quickly. Lynette has been the temporary manager in CES for the past year.

CNE Updates

We have started the 1st orientation group of 2025! You will see 4 new faces on the unit soon.

Hospital Acquired Infections - we've had several hospital acquired RSV infection cases attributed to our unit this week. Some reminders to think about.

Strict adherence to proper hand hygiene – 4 moments of hand hygiene

·        Minimize clutter throughout the unit and nursing stations, including patient rooms- surfaces CANNOT be disinfected if they are full of clutter

-          Keep patient room and PPE carts clear of clutter and drawers closed.

·         Staff must perform hand hygiene prior to entering PPE carts –

-          Access PPE carts with CLEAN HANDS ONLY. Organisms can survive on cloth and other surfaces, accessing the PPE cart with dirty hands can contaminate supplies (ie bags of clean PPE gowns). It was noted during previous hand hygiene audits that some staff are not performing hand hygiene prior to donning PPE and are therefore, potentially contaminating the PPE supplies.

-          Clean supplies should NOT be on the floor (ie gowns hanging out of PPE carts on the floor, BP supplies on the floor, etc)

·       Nursing work/procedure black tables in patient rooms must cleared and disinfected q shift.  (If using blue pads they must be changed q shift)

Ensure symptom and ARO screening on every admissions.

·       Ensure staff ONLY have access to patient Kanban supply cupboards (remind staff that hand hygiene must be done prior to accessing Kanban cupboards).
