PIPD Update, January 23, 2025

 Staff Updates – Please Read

Grab a coffee — this is a long one, but important.

Vacation Planning

When requesting vacation, please submit requests in the full blocks you are wanting. Exact dates will not be a significant issue at this time. Vacation trades will be processed before annual vacation scheduling begins, so please ensure requests are submitted early.

Vocera Use – Important Reminder

Before calling a resident to notify them of a result or ask a question, please follow this process:

  1. Ask a nurse on your unit if the resident needs to be notified
  2. If yes, review the situation with the Charge or Resource Nurse
  3. If it is still determined that a call is required, proceed with contacting the resident

There have been a high number of unnecessary calls. This process is intended to reduce call volume and provide a learning opportunity for newer nurses to troubleshoot with colleagues. Thank you for your cooperation.

Social Fund Update

Thank you to Carly for leading the social committee. The cupboards and coffee mugs are fully stocked. To participate, please send $20 to pipdsocials@gmail.com and join the PIPD Social Page for updates. This initiative plays an important role in supporting unit morale. Thank you, Carly.

PYXIS – Please Read Carefully

There are multiple outstanding narcotic discrepancies on Pyxis machines, with some dating back as far as 129 days.

All discrepancies must be resolved at the end of every shift. Accurate documentation is required to comply with Health Canada legal requirements. This is extremely important.

Safety Reporting – New Process

Effective February 1, 2026, Saskatoon will transition to using the Safety Reporting System exclusively for electronic incident reporting. The Safety Centre phone line will remain available for verbal reports from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily.

Education and training for staff and leaders on the Safety Reporting System are available online through Patient Safety Incident Reporting.

Fall Prevention Updates

Effective January 13, 2026, two new Acute Care Clinical Procedures have been implemented to support fall prevention and injury reduction across the province—one for inpatient settings and one for outpatient settings.

These procedures standardize the Fall Prevention and Injury Reduction Program across all Saskatchewan Health Authority acute care sites and replace all existing fall prevention policies, work standards, and related documents.

Training materials and policy documents are available through the SHA Policy and Clinical Standards Document Finder.

Code Navy – Practice Drills

We will be starting active Code Navy practice drills on the unit. These drills are intended to ensure staff are familiar with procedures and prepared to respond effectively.

  • First practice date: January 27
  • Additional practice dates will be communicated as scheduled

Your participation is important to help maintain a safe environment for staff, patients, and families.

Individual Client Risk Assessment (ICRA) Program – Coming March 1, 2026

Many SHA providers have experienced violent incidents resulting in physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Managing potentially violent or assaultive behavior is a reality in healthcare.

Under Occupational Health and Safety legislation, providers have the right to be informed of risks and how to work safely. SHA is required to identify risks and take every reasonable precaution to protect workers. The ICRA Program has been developed to meet these requirements.

The ICRA Program will be integrated into your care area and existing workflows. Its goals include:

  • Supporting providers to identify behaviors associated with violence and assess risk levels
  • Assisting staff in applying appropriate control measures to promote safety while maintaining client-centered care
  • Ensuring access to relevant safety information, including known triggers and contributing factors
  • Involving clients and families in identifying strategies to prevent escalation
  • Supporting staff following violent or distressing incidents
  • Encouraging participation in safety reporting and continuous improvement

Q-card UPDATE: Midazolam Direct IV dose administration on PIPD. Administration not related to Procedural Sedation or Palliative Care. (S-Drive 🠖 q-cards-nursing 🠖 Midazolam Direct IV PIPD).

Please review if your patient has Direct IV (push) Midazolam ordered.

CNE Update

 Product Back Order

    1. Adaptic Touch Non Adherent Silicone Dressing is on back order. Replacement is Mepitel One.

    2. Antimicrobial Wound packing is on back order on/off. If this is ordered and support staff are unable to order up, please ask Wound Care/physician for alternative orders.
Glucometers
If you see a message on the Glucometer saying "needs to be downloaded" or similar, take the glucometer to the Point of Care Testing Room in PICU. Place glucometer onto "hardwired base". Leave until the base until glucometer says "idle". This may take between 5 - 90 minutes.
