Before the new lines are officially posted, you have the opportunity to submit an Expression of Interest if you'd like to permanently move into another available line.

Simply email Sharon and Kelly with your preferred line(s). Requests will be awarded based on seniority.

👩‍⚕️ Nurse Practitioner Updates

Jennifer Lowe and Shasta Zeeman have shared a few important updates:

They are also available through Switchboard, but please ask for them by first and last name, not by their role.

Beginning August 10:

• Jen will transition to Pediatric Orthopedics.
• Shasta will return to Pediatric General Surgery.

Jen will be away July 15 – August 10.

During this time:

• There will be no Pediatric General Surgery NP coverage.
• During the day, contact the patient's primary general surgeon.
• After hours, contact the on-call General Surgery resident.

🌿 New Indigenous EFAP Supports

As of July 1, Indigenous employees and their family members now have access to culturally connected support through the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).

New services include:

• Elder and Traditional Healer Support Network
• Indigenous Cognitive Behavioural Program

These confidential services are available at no cost to all SHA employees and are another important step toward supporting Indigenous wellness and advancing Truth and Reconciliation.

🚌 Parking Shuttle Changes – Effective July 20

Parking Services has updated shuttle schedules.

Ave C Shuttle

• Dedicated shuttle service between SCH and Ave C will no longer operate between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
• During these hours, please use the inter-facility shuttle and let the driver know you'd like to stop at Ave C.

Lot 15 Shuttle

• An additional shuttle has been added during peak times:
• 6:00–9:00 a.m.
• 3:00–6:00 p.m.

🔄 Flow Coordinator Reminder

Our coordinator continues to play an important role in supporting complex patient discharges.

Their responsibilities include:

• Coordinating patient and family education
• Organizing discharge plans
• Arranging equipment and supplies
• Coordinating follow-up appointments
• Supporting safe transitions home

NG (Nasogastric) Feeding Education Update

The Flow Coordinator will initiate NG feeding education Monday through Friday and will provide families with the new PIER (Patient Information and Education Resource) booklet, along with the necessary supplies and prescriptions.

What families will be taught:

• ✔️ How to perform placement checks
• ✔️ Feeding schedules
• ✔️ Pump setup and takedown
• ✔️ Hands-on practice using the simulation doll
• ✔️ What to expect throughout the teaching process and a schedule for learning

Working Together

The Flow Coordinator and bedside nursing staff will continue to work closely to ensure families receive consistent education.

Please remember:

• Do not delay the initial NG teaching if a patient is admitted on an evening or weekend.
• Continue reinforcing education for patients with more complex discharge needs.
• For straightforward cases, NG insertions will transition back to bedside nursing once teaching has been initiated.

📘 PIER Resource

 PIER (Patient Information and Education Resource) has been developed specifically for our NG-fed patients. This comprehensive booklet replaces our previous teaching document.

Krista will print and review the booklet with families during weekday teaching. If you require a copy on evenings or weekends, it is available on the S: drive.

Nickie Doll NG Teaching

Using water-based lubricant with the 8 FR NG tube makes insertion into the teaching doll much easier.

Pyxis Reminder

When using the "Patient Specific Fridge Medication" override, please ensure you are only removing medications that are labelled specifically for your patient.  If you are removing an epidural from the fridge – remove the med under your patients name rather than choosing “fridge med”

Collodion Remover

Need collodion remover after hours? You'll find a bottle in the unit 2 medication room. Let the tech's know when the bottle is out so they can replace.

CNE Update:

NEW Q-card & S-drive folder

Breastmilk & EBM Storage Guidelines has been updated. The q-card box version will be available next week in the boxes. It is currently available on the S-Drive in a new folder "Breastmilk EBM & Breast Pump". It has links to the original SHA document and the Clinical Procedures.

PIPD Update July 6, 2026

Sorry everyone this first part didn't save for some reason. Sending again.  We wanted to share an exciting update on the new master schedule!  Over the past few weeks, we've met several times with HR, Scheduling, and the Union to finalize the schedule, and we're very close to having the new master approved. The biggest news is that, after working together and listening to the feedback from the nursing staff, we have determined that a full line selection will not be required. We are pleased that we were able to make that happen.  What does not having a full line selection mean? When adding the new positions to our department we determined we needed to make minimal adjustments to a small number of lines. As these changes minimally impacted lines and employees, we worked with the Local to create a plan to that does not required everyone to reselect their line. We're really excited about this outcome and hope you are too!  What this means for you: Step 1: All permanent employees will retain their current line Once the master is approved, all PIPD staff will have an opportunity to see the master. This will allow employees to see the changes made to current lines and review all new lines. Step 2: If there is a new line that interests you, you may have an opportunity to swap into a new line. The new line must be the SAME FTE as your current permanent FTE (example 1.0, 0.79, 0.63..) You will be able to submit an Expression of Interest (details and deadline to submit will be shared when master is shared with employees). Those employees who complete the expression of interest will be ranked by seniority and afforded the opportunity to choose a new line. As each member selects their new line the options available to the next employee will include the line the previous employee vacated. Once the expression of interest selections are complete, the remaining lines will be offered to new incumbents per our normal posting and awarding method (applying online).  At this time, we remain on track with our original timeline and implementation date September 20, 2026.  Our RN baseline will be 21DX and 21NX. The LPNs are also scheduled DXs and NXs and will allow us to reach the NEW optimal baseline of 22 DX and 22 NX.  Please note this is hot off the press, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email either of us or Lori Powell at president@sunlocal75.ca.  Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and support throughout this process. July’s Code of the Month focuses on Code Purple: Hostage Taking. Staff are reminded to remain calm, follow the direction of the hostage taker if directly involved, and avoid actions that could escalate the situation. Staff who are not directly involved should move to a safe location and avoid the affected area. Ongoing awareness, clear communication, and familiarity with local response procedures are important to support a coordinated and safe response.
