PIPD Update Sept 5, 2025

Provincial Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Program – Nirsevimab

The Provincial Pediatric RSV Program of Saskatchewan, with support from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health and the Maternal and Child Executive Leadership Team, is pleased to announce upcoming changes to RSV prophylaxis for babies and high-risk young children with the introduction of nirsevimab (Beyfortus™). Nirsevimab is a monoclonal antibody that provides protection against severe RSV for at least five months after a single injection.

Beginning October 1 through March 31, nirsevimab will be available to all babies born during the RSV season, after birth and prior to hospital discharge. High-risk infants and children born before the RSV season will continue to be eligible for RSV antibodies and will receive their injections as outpatients in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Regina, provided by the RSV program coordinators. Families of these children will be contacted directly by the RSV Program to set up an appointment for injection.

All supporting resources for training and implementation are now available online under RespiratorySyncytial Virus (RSV) – Clinical Resources. A mandatory MatChild - Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Learning Module (MC-LM-0034) must be completed by all staff who will administer nirsevimab in Maternal Care, Post-Partum, and Pediatric units across the province. This training is required prior to administering nirsevimab and must be completed before October 1, 2025.

  • For PIPD Nurses - we ask you complete the MyConnection eLearning Module by Oct 1. We will have 4 in-person sessions with our RSV Nurse. Our goal will be to get as many of the nurses working Sept 10 & 17 to attend. Sharon, Cherie & Tanzly will attend a session as well and send out/have information ready for staff to give Nirsevimab.
  • Make sure to sign the Certification Record folder at the sign-in desk once you've completed the MyConnection eLearning.

MULTIPLE SAFETY ISSUES with NG insertion

There have been multiple safety issues with NGs not being inserted deep enough and families taught to go "2 fingers below the nipple" for measuring. This is NOT best practice. Please ensure you are measuring/teaching families to measure: tip of nose to earlobe to halfway between the xyphoid process (bottom of breastbone) and bellybutton.
If you are unsure how to measure the NG in the moment, please reach out to a CN, Resource Nurse, senior staff in the unit then connect with a CNE after for follow up. If you are needing a refresher, reach out to a CNE before you need to re-insert/teach a family.
Information is found in the Discharge folder of the S-Drive (NG teaching and supplies 🠊 New NG Insertion and care)

CNE Update

We are excited to welcome 8 new staff to PIPD. You will see them in buddy shifts soon!

NJ/NG Bridles - removing the bridle is an RNSP - it requires certification. We are working on how to get staff certified at Ed Days.
