PIPD Update October 9, 2025

 πŸ‚ PIPD WEEKLY BLOG | OCTOBER 9

πŸ’™ HAPPY PEDS NURSES WEEK!

Happy Peds Nurses Week! Thank you to our amazing pediatric nursing team for everything you do for our patients, families and each other.

🦠 RSV & RESPIRATORY SEASON REMINDERS

  • Complete the annual RSV education module (MC-LM-0034).
  • When nirsevimab is required, ensure the physician is using the appropriate order set.
  • Once administered or declined, complete the RSV Record and send it to the RSV Program. Do not send it to Public Health or complete an Inpatient Vaccine Admin Record.
  • Please ensure the appropriate SCM isolation alert is entered on admission and reviewed once per shift. Accurate alerts are important for IPAC contact tracing.
  • Please also ensure current IPAC signage, PPE donning/doffing information and hand-hygiene signage are in place.

🧼 IPAC REMINDERS

The annual IPAC review is mandatory for all SHA staff and is available through MyConnection E-Learning.

Please remember that food and drinks are to be stored and consumed in designated areas. When sharing food, individually wrapped items are preferred.

🩺 QUICK UNIT UPDATES

  • PICC discharge kits: Two emergency kits have been prepared for children going home with PICCs, and are in the unit 3 team room. Also, a Q-card has been added with related information.
  • Ins & Outs: Please remember that intake and output needs to be documented.
  • ICRA Tracker: We welcome feedback on what is or isn’t working with this communication.
  • CPR stools: All have been located, labelled and signed. Thank you!
  • Morning vitals: Physicians are asking that morning vitals be recorded by 0930 to support their assessments.

πŸ’‰ EDUCATION & REQUIRED LEARNING

  • Flu clinics: Peer immunizers will be available in the Unit 4 team room throughout October. Watch for upcoming clinic dates.
  • Cybersecurity: New mandatory training is being delivered through MetaCompliance. Watch for an SHA email from no-reply@metacompliance.com and a Teams notification.
  • Education days: Everyone should have an Ed Day scheduled. If the date doesn't work, you can submit a trade through Staff Scheduling.
  • Indigenous Smudging Ceremony Policy (SHA-04-007): All SHA team members are required to review the new policy. SHA employees can access the review through E-Learn.

🩺 PEDIATRIC LINES AVAILABLE

Several pediatric lines are currently available, including permanent part-time as well as other permanent and temporary opportunities.

If you don't currently have a line, reach out to Sharon or Kelly to discuss options. The next rotation begins October 18

πŸŽ„ CHRISTMAS STAFFING

We know the Christmas holiday period is an important time for staff and their families.  At the same time, we need to ensure appropriate staffing is in place to safely care for our patients.  There are currently shifts posted that we are hoping staff will consider picking up if available.  We would like to encourage Part-time and casual staff to review the available shifts and consider picking up additional shifts if available.

This is an early, voluntary request. If you're able to help, please apply through Staff Scheduling as usual. Thank you for supporting one another during the holiday season.

Please do not remove these stools unless they are needed for CPR.   Please clean the stools after each use.

Influenza & COVID Vaccine learning modules now available on MyConnection:

Do you still need a goal for your Continuing Competency for license renewal?
Here is a very interesting article about pediatric pain with injections (like seasonal influenza):

Product Backorder Advisory
Sage Essential Bath wipes are on backorder. You may see Medline ReadyBath Total Body Wipe or Cardinal Hygie Swash Bath Wipe as a replacement.
BOTH products are compatible with the Wipes Warmers.

Questions you asked - information your CNEs learned

🩸TSIN & Platelets
We have been asked how TSIN works since platelets only need a group & screen once per admission. .  Here is Transfusion Medicine Answer:  The platelets will always be issued under the most recent TSIN.  If the patient does not need a new T&S collected, we will continue to issue platelets under the existing TSIN, provided the patient is still wearing the armband, for up to 28 days.   Please call Transfusion Medicine at 655-2179 if you have questions about TSIN

πŸ’Cotton Balls out of stock!
We have asked for when cotton balls will be back in stock/if there is a sub. Currently there is a very large bag of cotton balls in Unit 4 by the EPP box.

𐄷 Did you Know traction supplies are in room 2013?
This room is down the middle hallway and is the same place PD  and Sleep Study Supplies are located.  All Traction supplies have been re-organized and labeled.  Step by step instructions on how to set up traction is also located there.  Please do not take apart any traction supplies.  When you need to admit a patient needing traction, and an Ortho resident asks for supplies, please direct them to this room.
Information also in S-drive- Q-cards - Traction Supplies and Set up Info

πŸ“ˆPCA cumulative dose
Cumulative is an adjective that means increasing or growing by one dose after another, including all previously added amounts.  It's a total amount built up over time by adding small pieces together (e.g., the cumulative amount of drug over the last 24 hours or the cumulative effect of daily stress).
The PCA cumulative is documented q4h on the MAR. Please do not erase the cumulative dose on the PCA pump. Anesthesia needs to see what the amount is q4h over the entire course of the pump's use on this patient. The MAR documentation should show the numbers continuing to increase over time.

πŸ’§Fluid Balance
Must be filled out for every patient. If there is no "accurate" ordered, do checkmarks for urine and write down "full breakfast tray" or "McDonald's" in the oral section. If you are weighing diapers or measuring urine, your 12hr and 24hr mL/kg/hr MUST be completed. Physicians have expressed concern and frustration with lack of & inaccuracy of fluid balance sheets lately. It is expected to be completed. Please help out your colleagues: if you notice this isn't being completed when doing handover, give direct and attainable feedback in that moment.
See example below of a completed fluid balance sheet. Ask a CNE if you need further education.

😩Complicated bloodwork requests
We hear you! It's time consuming to find the tubes, the minimum values, and all the details needed to complete your work. We are escalating these concerns, again, up the ladder.
Questions about Metabolic patient bloodwork: call 306-655-1588 (Mon-Fri) & ask to talk to a metabolic nurse.
Questions about Immunology patient bloodwork: call Sherene at 306-371-9706 (Mon-Fri)
