We appreciate all the support to the UA's in recent weeks. These vacancies have almost all been filled again. 

The UA's have a few new processes:                                                                                                   Please provide discharge charts to the UA's asap so that they know to strip room as quickly as possible and so that charts don't get lost.                                                                                                            STAT orders for supplies will now be phoned in rather than faxed in. All regular orders will still be processed through my connection. We are asking everyone to look in all units for items before asking UA's to order STAT supplies. 

We are starting to look at Fall needs for both orientation and preceptorships. If you are able to be a preceptor, we would love to hear from you.  We welcome staff sharing these roles if you are interested in that option and it works with schedules. 

If you are expecting, congratulations! Please don't hesitate to come and speak to Tammy or Sharon regarding anticipated due dates. 

CNE Update

SMOF Filter - memo from Pharmacy on the temporary hold on using the SMOF filter:

Pharmacy has just been made aware of temporarily supply interruptions to our new ICU Medical 1.2 micron filter – put into usage as of May 16th. As reminder – the conversion to the ICU Medical product had been made to remedy infusion occlusion issues with other filter brands.

Due to the above unforeseen supply issue pharmacy will not be providing SMOF filters for the next few days (likely 4-5 days). As an interim measure and in consultation with the CNE group – we will temporarily revert to NOT filtering SMOF. 

The decision to revert to unfiltered process is a joint decision based upon a) known issue with other filter brands occluding, b) an anticipated short term supply interruption and c) long historical precedent of not filtering.

Once more ICU Medical filters are obtained, Pharmacy will revert to sending filters with SMOF. The pharmacy and nursing CNE team are also exploring several alternative scenarios and will be jointly working towards a more robust troubleshooting plan for future events.

We appreciate the ongoing support and teamwork between our department and nursing as we navigate this temporary stock setback. It is our hope we will be back to normal operations sometime next week.

Please note, there is NO change to filtering our Primene and you are to continue using the 0.2 micron filter for the Primene component of TPN.

NEW - Work Standard for Pain Ease: found in the Red Medication binder, on the Courage Cart, and on the S-Drive in the q-card folder. It is simple steps for how to use Pain Ease as the "spray" method and the NEW optional "soaked gauze" method. The gauze method would be helpful if the child doesn't like the spray feeling or hissing sound the can makes. 

Pain Ease is NOT suitable for port access.

Did you know? - Phlebotomy can NOT spray Pain Ease on patients. It is not within their scope to administer. If your patient needs Pain Ease prior to a poke, please make sure you are there to administer it.

NEW Gtubes & JTubes - some of our patients have received new PGJ tubes (brand AMT G-Jet). These lovely devices need a special Gtube extension set only found in the Charge Nurse room cupboard. The Jtube port GLOWS IN THE DARK! You can use the glow in the dark extension set - found in the Charge Nurse room cupboard...or our regularly stocked extension set from the Clean Supply room will also work. Please see the picture below. The G-Jet Patient Education Guide has been added to the q-card folder on the S-drive for more information. Care of the site and the extension sets has not changed. Please continue to care for this PGJ site as you have always done.

Supply reminders:

    AirTap LC are single use only. All equipment including pads are found in room 2013 (the PD supply room). Remember to review criteria - hanging in room 2013 and on the S-Drive.

    Longshaft Halyard are kept in Walmart. This is your emergency replacement if your Gtube or PGJ  falls out/fails. This is essential to keep the stoma open. This is only for established stomas over 8             weeks old. If out of stock in correct size, use same sized foley catheter. Call a 1600 if no supply.             Inform CNE and call the Gtube Nurse (leave a message if after hours) so we can get a new Gtube.
