Who’s new!
Many of you
may have noticed a new face on the unit: music therapist Sophia James-Cavan has
joined the Child Life team recently and I (Ruth) am so happy 😊 Sophia will be working more frequently on the
inpatient unit for the next four months, with her days of work being Tuesday,
Wednesday and Fridays. Sophia’s name is on the contact list at each
nursing station or as always, you can call music therapy as well.

Guidelines for Hazardous medications are listed in each Med Room. Please refer to the medication list and PPE
list for safe handling and administration for C1, C2, C3

§ NEW Level 1 RN, Level 2
RN and LPN can administer C3 and C2 medications (except Blina, Tacro IV). See RN/LPN Scope of Practice
§ If
medications are not coming in prepared unit-of-use dose/final form: Call
pharmacy about preparing these medications.
If
still unable: Follow strict PPE. If
administering ½ tablet this should come from pharmacy. If needing to make into final preparation ie.
liquid – dissolving is always BEST over crushing. If medication is not coming
in final preparation – always submit a 1600.
Precautions & Extended
Precautions:

Precautions are highlighted for some C1 medications. See Precautionary table in Med rooms
§ If medication not listed on Precautionary table, the rule of 48 hours after final dose applies (pg. 19)
Drug Waste Disposal/Spill: See section 3.11 (pg. 17)
§ Drug
waste of C1 - No change to current practice
§ Drug waste of C2 – Dispose in yellow hazardous sharps container & use spill kit.
§ Drug waste of C3 - Dispose in Cactus & yellow hazardous sharps container. No change to current practice.
Bodily Fluids: (pg. 19)
§ C1:
Follow current practice and possible extended precautions per list.
o NEW: If soiled linens – place cytotoxic sticker on 2 sides of the bag and have U/A or USW transport to linen services. (Cannot use Linen chute)
o NEW: Stickers will be
available on all chemo bins
§ C2 & C3: No precautionary period. No change to current practice.
