SHA’s new Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Policy

A message from Andrew Will, Chief Executive Officer; Derek Miller, Chief Operating Officer; and Jennifer Ahenakew, Vice President of First Nations and Mรฉtis Health

In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, we are pleased to announce the release of the Saskatchewan Health Authority's (SHA) Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Policy, an important step in our ongoing journey toward reconciliation and the delivery of equitable and culturally-safe care.

This policy reaffirms our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. It supports our work to advance a culturally-responsive health-care environment that acknowledges, respects, and integrates Indigenous knowledge, healing practices, and worldviews into our everyday care and interactions.

The Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Policy is grounded in shared responsibility. As part of our CARES values, all SHA team members have a role in fostering inclusive, respectful, and culturally responsive health care.

I encourage each of us to review and understand the new Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Policy.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to strengthening cultural responsiveness.

What is a 1600 and why does it matter?
A safety report - also called a 1600 - is fSHR's method for documenting safety issues. This can include, but is not limited to: med errors, near miss med errors, dietary not sending enough formula even if it's ordered correctly, slips/trips/falls for patients and staff, verbal abuse, staff injury, etc.
Calling 306-655-1600 does make a difference. It is open 24/7 even on weekends & stat holidays.
It doesn't take a lot of time to report but it can make an impactful difference for your colleagues and patients/families moving forward. If you didn't document it, it didn't happen. ๐Ÿ˜€

CNE Update

Rooms 2301 & 2305:
These rooms are very much connected. If one room is operating in isolation mode, even if the other is not, all doors must still be closed to maintain that pressure differential. This includes the in-room kanban door 2305.

Keep in mind that the room mode only affects the alarm - the actual airflow is the same whether the room monitor is in alarm mode or setback(off) mode.

2025 Annual eLearning:
We are working on it! The server all fSHR wards use is currently having some issues.

Ed Days
Dates were sent to scheduling beginning of June. FT & PT staff will be scheduled. Once we have the schedules back, we will send out a message for casual staff to sign up. If you are needing to trade your Ed Day, please find a friend to trade with and submit on Staff Scheduling.

Primene filters/0.2 micron filters
The stock amount in each unit has been increased to 10. This means our unit should have 40 between all 4 units.

Did you know?
TPN bloodwork has an order set on SCM! Use this method when req'ing TPN bloodwork and this is how to find it:
Order sets - Pediatric PN Bloodwork - Choose the set you need
remember to appropriately choose lab vs unit collect sets

Feeding Pump Issues?
If you are having issues with the new feeding pumps. Please troubleshoot the following:
1. Is the pump the right amount of space away from the bag - the pump should be the length from your wrist to elbow from the bottom of the bag
2. Is the cassette fully seated in the pump
3. Change cassette/bag - we are trying to see if this is a cassette/bag problem; call 1600 and leave a Vocera message or email for the CNE
4. Change the pump - call 1600 and send the pump to clinical engineering (ask a Support Staff to help)
We need documentation for issues. Your 1600 call is important.

IV Pump or Syringe Pump Issues?
If you are running "No Drug Selected" (Plum 360) or "mL/hr" (Medfusion), please put in a 1600. Then leave a Vocera message or email for a CNE. We can only help make the pumps better if we know about it.
