PIPD Update October 2, 2026

Celebrate Halloween at JPCH with you and our patients and families.

๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿ‘ป

Reverse Trick-or-Treating has been so successful over the last few years we will continue to make this a tradition. For those of you who were not part of the action last year and as I reminder to those who have been annual participants, let me tell you about the details for Friday October 30, 2026:

Who: Any JPCH or RUH department staff member.

  • The Child Life department staff coordinate costumes for the patients, get treat bag decorating supplies to patients, and lead the parade.
  • We invite staff from all departments to join us in the parade. Costumes are mandatory if you are participating! This year we encourage you to dress as your favorite children’s story book or character.

When:

  • Please meet between 1:15 and 1:30 (outside the doors to PIPD).
  • The parade begins at 1:30 sharp!

Our team thanks everyone so much for making this event a yearly highlight! We had close to 80 staff participants last year.  Your participation and enthusiasm is appreciated by the families we support at JPCH.

PIPD Update Sept 25, 2026

PIPD Weekly Update ✨

Hi everyone!

Here’s your weekly roundup of updates, reminders, and a few things to keep on your radar as we head into the week ahead. Thanks, as always, for your flexibility, teamwork, and everything you do for our patients and each other.

๐Ÿฉบ CRNS 2027 Licence Renewal

The 2027 CRNS licence renewal opens October 1 and closes November 30, 2026 at midnight.

A few things to check off before renewal opens:

  • Make sure you can access your CRNS Portal and the email linked to your profile.

  • Review and update your Continuing Competence Program (CCP) learning plan.

  • Have your eligible nursing practice hours ready for December 1, 2025 to November 30, 2026.

  • Activate your MyCNPS account if you haven't already.

What's new this year?

Professional Liability Protection registration and payment will now be completed directly through CNPS using the MyCNPS portal.

That means renewal will involve two separate transactions—one with CRNS and one with CNPS—so don't forget to keep both receipts.

๐Ÿ“‹ Pediatric Lines Available

We currently have several pediatric lines available, including permanent part-time positions, along with other permanent and temporary opportunities.

If you don't currently have a line, reach out to Sharon or Kelly. This is a unique opportunity, and we're happy to help you find a position that works for you.

Regular practice on the unit helps build consistency, confidence, and experience in our complex pediatric environment.

  • Next rotation begins: October 18

  • Rotations repeat every four weeks.

  • New staff start dates can be adjusted to align with orientation completion.

If you'd like to see what's available or chat through your options, let us know!

๐Ÿงก September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour the victims and survivors of the residential school system and reflect on the ongoing journey of Truth and Reconciliation.

SHA encourages staff to wear orange on September 30, as well as on the last Friday of every month, as a visible sign of this commitment.

Events across Saskatchewan

Truth and Reconciliation Day Events in Saskatchewan – Saskatchewan Federation of Labour

Saskatoon Events:

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Gathering 2026 - WanuskewinWanuskewin

Every Child Matters Pow Wow 2026 | Saskatoon Tribal Council

2026 — Orange Shirt Day Run/Walk Saskatoon — Race Roster — Registration, Marketing, Fundraising

It Starts with Me

Truth and Reconciliation is a shared commitment, but meaningful change also begins with each of us.

Inspired by the First Nations Health Authority's #ItStartsWithMe initiative, SHA's It Starts with Me campaign gives employees and physicians an opportunity to take a step toward advancing their personal commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

As of the September 22 SHA Rounds, more than 300 SHA employees and practitioners had taken the pledge.

๐Ÿฅ Coming to RUH: 3D Campus Mapping

Starting Monday, September 28, a project will begin to capture 3D information from rooms across the seven buildings that make up the RUH campus.

Using LIDAR technology, the team will capture room dimensions and infrastructure information. A built-in privacy feature automatically removes images of people, and the project has been reviewed and approved by the SHA Privacy Department.

The team will be moving through the campus and spending only a few seconds in each room.

So if you spot someone walking around with what looks like futuristic surveying equipment... now you'll know why. ๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿฉธ Practice Update: TSIN Implementation

The Transfusion Service Identification Number (TSIN) has now been implemented in former Saskatoon Health Region facilities.

Updated Transfusion Medicine forms are available, along with supporting resources including:

  • TSIN FAQ: CS-G-0543

  • PIER document: CS-PIER-0368

  • TSIN eLearning modules in MyConnection

Thank you to everyone for supporting this important change and helping promote safe, consistent transfusion practices.

Quick reminder when restocking forms

Please make sure you're replacing forms with the most current versions. Keeping up-to-date documentation available helps reduce extra work and prevent errors.

๐Ÿงบ White Mesh Linen Bags

You'll now notice that patient gowns, IV gowns, and bariatric gowns are arriving in the white mesh bags as well.

A quick refresher:

  • Empty mesh bags go into the blue hamper/soiled linen carts so they can be washed and reused.

  • Please don't return empty mesh bags—or bags that have been in a patient room—to the clean linen carts.

๐Ÿฆ  IPAC Corner: JoAnn's Cameo

JoAnn, our Infection Control Nurse, is joining future blogs with a fun little IPAC cameo—because everyone needs at least one favourite infection-control fact. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Did you know?

Hand hygiene is the MOST effective way to prevent the spread of infections.

Healthcare workers are powerful advocates for hand hygiene with patients and families. A few simple ways to model it:

  • Perform hand hygiene where patients can see you.

  • Talk about hand hygiene while you're cleaning your hands.

  • Point out hand sanitizer stations, soap dispensers, and "how-to" posters.

  • Let someone know if you notice an empty dispenser.

๐Ÿ‘ Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who continues to step up for the unit.

The last few months have brought staffing pressures, absences, and vacancies, and your teamwork continues to make a difference every single day.

You are an essential part of this team, and your work is genuinely appreciated.

As always, if you have questions, ideas for improvement, or topics you'd like included in future updates, please reach out.

Thank you for everything you do for our patients, families, and each other.

— Kelly & Sharon

(Sept 4 was postponed)

PIPD Update August 28, 2026

 Happy Friday!

Thanks for another great week, everyone. We have two new Unit Support Workers who have started with us, so please help us welcome Sherry and Lorene to the ward!

A little lost and found…

We are currently missing our Unit 2 glucometer. It should be marked JPCH Unit 2 on the side, so please keep your eyes open for it.

We are also missing two CPR stools.

On a more positive equipment note, our new vein finder should be arriving soon! We’ll keep you posted once it’s here and ready to use.  Update to the lift – both lifts now use the same type of sling so can be used interchangeable. Voila.

Reminder:

A quick reminder about assignments for transplant patients.  Regardless of how long ago a transplant occurred, transplant patients must only be assigned to chemo trained nurse. This certification is required at every stage of care on our unit.

We know assignments involve a lot of moving parts, and occasionally something may get missed. Charge Nurses need your help to catch these errors. If you notice that you have been assigned a transplant patient by accident please let the CN know right away so the assignment can be changed.  Thanks for helping us stay on top of this.

If you are floated for your shift – check in with charge to double check your points are updated.

Social Stuff

Book Club – September 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Prairie Sun

And just a reminder that this is really more about getting together than actually discussing the book. So even if you didn’t finish YESTERYEAR (or didn’t start it!), come out for some fun.

Forever Golden Walk – September 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Meewasin Park

Our team name is The Sunshine Squad. Check out the PIPD Social page for information on how to join the team.

A Memo That May or May Not Apply to You…

Starting August 31, 2026, Nursing Consultative Services will have access to electronically document the Nursing Consultation Progress Note in Sunrise Clinical Manager.

This will provide nursing consultative staff with a standardized way to document assessments, interventions, education, follow-up and ongoing support. It will also help ensure consultation activities and patient care are clearly documented and integrated into the overall care plan.

Clinical units and members of the health care team can access the Nursing Consultation Progress Note through the Documents Tab or the Visit Record Review Tab.

So… this may be very relevant to you, or it may be one of those memos that you read and file away for later!

And Finally…

For those of you working this weekend — thank you!

For those who are off — enjoy it!

The countdown to back-to-school is officially on. Good luck to all of us as we get back into routines, schedules, lunches, backpacks and everything else that comes with September.

Have a great weekend!

Sharon & Kelly

  • Shout-out to Melissa! We received some wonderful feedback from a family in Unit 4 who were very impressed with the care and support you provided. Thank you, Melissa, for making such a positive impact!

PIPD Update August 14, 2026

The BDM Pharmacy system will be in downtime from 23:59 August 17 to 01:30 August 18.

 During Pharmacy BDM downtime:

·         ROUTINE orders - Scan to pharmacy using normal procedures and they will be processed when the pharmacy system is operational.

·         URGENT orders (orders that need to be sent from Pharmacy during the downtime) –

o Write patient location on the order page

o FAX order to 6607

·         STAT orders –

o Write patient location on the order page

o FAX order to 6607

o page Pharmacy to notify

·         PYXIS units:

o All Pyxis machines will be in Critical override during this time (All stocked medications are on override)

o ADT Information will not go to Pyxis during the downtime, so you may have to use FACILITY SEARCH to find a patient, or enter a TEMPORARY PATIENT

·         Discharge/Transfer Med Rec forms:

o   The MoV Application will be unavailable during this outage window as well. As a result, transfer med rec reports will not be able to be generated.

CNE Update:

NEW Isolette - the BabyLeo

There is a new folder within the q-cards folder of the S-drive: Isolette - BabyLeo
You will find:
- Admitting and caring for an infant in an Isolette including the use of the Radiant Warmer Work Standard
    - this includes information on the powering on, making changes to parameters, Air Temp, documentation, safety tips, using the Radiant Warrmer, weigh scale, Xray, adding patient name into the screen, & lighting options.
- Transitioning from Isolette to Open Care Bed Work Standard
    - this includes information on how/when to decrease temp, documentation, safety tips, Open Care Bed (also known as de-roofing), and how to power off when infant is discharged.
- BabyLeo TN500 Instruction Manual
- Cleaning Instructions
- updated Q-card (also in the recipe box of each unit)

There is NO change to previous practice of:
- the warmth the isolette should be set to initially
- the monitoring of the patient while in the isolette
- weaning from the isolette

We DO NOT use the skin temp feature. This is a NICU only function. There are too many variables to ensuring the probe is measuring accurately. If an infant is too sick to be monitored via air temp only, then this patient may need a higher level of care (aka go to NICU). We also do not have the probes on our floor.

The heated mattress is an optional function of our machines but will most likely not be used. We want air temp as our main warming source.

The BiliLux (bili light) is on hold for now. Do not use until more information is available and announced. Use the bili blanket as our phototherapy source.
Reasons we are not using the BiliLux yet:
        - physicians need to understand this therapy source and write specific orders for radiance levels
        - we need to get safety goggles for staff
        - we need to have information for you to safely use

There is a 23min video from Drager if you do want to review. There are more options discussed compared to what we will use but it is thorough: Babyleo How-to-use Video

We sincerely appreciate the nurses who set up and started care with the isolettes this past weekend. You are rock stars! ๐Ÿคฉ

 Child Life Referrals

Did you know a Child life referral can be for the patient and the family? We didn't!

We are lucky to have involved parents and sometimes they need a little extra from us. With a child life referral, they can help with coping plans, offer gift cards, and offer other resources that can help make the families stay more manageable.

Did you know if it's your patients birthday, you can go down to the gift shop and pick them out a present?

☀️ SUNSHINE FUND!

Jim Pattison Children's Hospital Foundation (JPCHF) is accepting grant requests until August 15.

JPCHF promotes excellence in maternal and pediatric health care across Saskatchewan, disbursing $4.5M in funding last year.

JPCHF grants patient care requests that show potential for enhancing care based on scientific excellence and relevance to children's and maternal health.

We encourage you to review our Granting Guidelines for more information.

We are looking at: Temp probes, new digital scale and highchairs. Anyone can apply and we can repeat asks to reinforce a need, just let Kelly or Sharon know if you do apply.

 Provisional:

Provisional was received late today. You should receive an email with the final version today. This will go into effect Sept 20, 2026.

Thank you so much to everyone that helped with supporting morale, staffing and extra demands on the unit this week. It was a challenging week. We couldn't do any of this without you and we are grateful for all of you! ๐Ÿ’‘

Sharon and Kelly

PIPD Update July 24, 2026

  Child Life Referrals

Did you know a Child life referral can be for the patient and the family? We didn't!

We are lucky to have involved parents and sometimes they need a little extra from us. With a child life referral, they can help with coping plans, offer gift cards, and offer other resources that can help make the families stay more manageable.

Did you know if it's your patient's birthday, you can go down to the gift shop and pick them out a present?

Postings:

A reminder that there are permanent and temporary lines posted. Take a peek & apply. They will be up until Sunday.

Just a FYI in case you are seeing these on our unit from time to time:

What is a Job Shadow?

Job Shadows provide individuals an opportunity to observe an SHA employee within a healthcare environment as they carry out their daily duties. This experience will help individuals determine if the healthcare role fits their personality or their professional goals prior to entering a field of employment or education.

Who is eligible for opportunities to Job Shadow?

Grade 11 and 12 High School students;

Post-Secondary Students;

the community; and

current SHA employees.

What are the guidelines for a Job Shadow?

available in placements of 4 or 8 hour durations;

a one-time/single location placement opportunity (additional placements for hard to recruit positions may be considered); and available in a variety of areas/locations, but does not include physician shadowing or surgical/critical care placements including Emergency Departments.

Housekeeping Info:

  1. IPAC spoke with EVS today regarding long stay cleans on the unit. They are happy to do a deeper room clean every 30 days for patients that have been admitted for long periods of time.  They ask that you notify their team by calling 2851, when these cleans are required and EVS will determine with the nurse when would be a good time for them to come. If you are able to move the patient out of the room during the clean- even better! Then they aren’t having to work around anyone.
  2. It was brought to IPAC’s attention that staff are not seeing EVS clean high point areas in our unit- including the ceiling, lights, etc. Linda, The EVS manager will escalate. Their WS will be updated to ensure this is clear.  EVS should be cleaning these areas if noticeably dirty and for transfer/discharge cleans.
  3. It was also brought to our attention that the area under the Kanban’s is not being cleaned regularly- this is something that should be done by EVS when they come do the daily room cleaning. If the pediatric staff are noticing that it is getting missed, Linda from EVS is encouraging them to mention it to EVS while up there.

Pyxis Discrepancies:

Please note that if a discrepancy has occurred on your shift because you removed a medication from Pyxis without selecting it (lorazapam, clonazapam, epidurals), this is an error. If you remove a medication before doing count, that creates a count error. This is the email from Pharamcy:

This is another reminder that there are multiple outstanding narcotic discrepancies on your Pyxis stations.  You will notice some of them are >30 days outstanding and it is the responsibility of your department to resolve these.  Some of these date back as far as 91 days.  For best practice, discrepancies should be resolved at the end of every shift.  These records must be accurate to align with Health Canada legal requirements.  If you cannot get these figured out I will need to escalate to the next level, including reporting these to Health Canada.

I have cleared off the discrepancies that Pharmacy created as of today, so any remaining discrepancies that have a Pharmacy staff linked to them will be because they found the error, not created it. A common theme for the remaining discrepancies is that your staff is taking the medication out when they are to be doing the blind count which creates a discrepancy in the current count and accessing the fridge other ways and not removing the medication appropriately in Pyxis to document usage.  This is also an increased risk to a patient for medication errors when medications are removed improperly and without proper documentation.

** Please review the Pyxis machine in Unit 2 & 3 to see if your name is attached to a discrepancy. How to solve discrepancies: Sign in to Pyxis ร  go to “Discrepancies” on main screen ร  scroll down to the discrepancy with your name ร  select this discrepancy ร  click “Resolve” on bottom of screen (you will need another nurse to sign ร  choose a pre-typed reason for the discrepancy or type your own ร  select “Accept”

Check out the video version of instructions (1 min 30 seconds): BD Pyxis Videos

 Expression of Interest

Expression of interest requests have been received and processed!

Postings are also now all up – take a look!

NG Teaching Updates

Just a reminder there have been some changes to the NG teaching documents.

There is now a provincial PIER (patient information and education resource) document we will use instead of the single page document.

Krista will provide the PIER document and a list of supplies to families in a green duotang, along with a prescription and bag of supplies, when she does the initial teach.

But should you need it, it is located on the S-drive under NG, there is also a link on the updated checklist.

When using the new Nickey doll for NG teaching the manufacturer recommends an 8fr NG and the use of water-based lubricant.

NP's

They have been added to switch board, but staff need to ask for them by first and last name not "peds surgery NP" or "Peds ortho NP."

  • Since May, Shasta has been mentoring with ortho, and Jan has been with peds gen surg.
  • On August 10, they are switching.
  • Jen will be mentoring with pediatric orthopedics, and Shasta will be returning to pediatric general surgery.
  • Jen away from July 15–August 10. There will be no general surgery NP coverage during that time, so while I am away nursing will have to call the patients primary general surgeon during the day and on call gen surgery resident after hours.

Anyone can apply just let Kelly or Sharon know if you do so we don’t duplicate the ask :)

 Child Protection Procedure

This is a reminder that the Child Protection: Reporting Duties and Support Procedure (SHA-07-003P5) was released on June 1, 2026, and is now available on E-Learn.

For those that cannot access E-Learn, you can find the procedure and video here:

This procedure applies to all team members and outlines our legal duty to recognize and report suspected child abuse or neglect involving individuals under 18, as well as documentation and privacy expectation.

๐Ÿ’™ Thank You for Supporting One Another

To our experienced staff: Thank you for continuing to mentor, teach, and create learning opportunities every day. Your willingness to share your knowledge helps build confidence, strengthens our team, and ultimately benefits our patients.

  • Jennifer Lowe: 639-480-9071
  • Shasta Zeeman: 639-480-8874

They are also available through Switchboard, but please ask for them by first and last name, not by their role.

  • Shasta will return to Pediatric General Surgery.

Jen will be away July 15 – August 10.

During this time:

  • There will be no Pediatric General Surgery NP coverage.
  • During the day, contact the patient's primary general surgeon.
  • After hours, contact the on-call General Surgery resident.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Your Feedback Matters

Jennifer and Shasta hope their presence on the wards has improved continuity of care and supported both staff and families.

If you have feedback, they would love to hear it! Please email Jennifer, Shasta, or Lynette (ces manager).

๐ŸŒฟ New Indigenous EFAP Supports

As of July 1, Indigenous employees and their family members now have access to culturally connected support through the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).

New services include:

  • Elder and Traditional Healer Support Network
  • Indigenous Cognitive Behavioural Program

These confidential services are available at no cost to all SHA employees and are another important step toward supporting Indigenous wellness and advancing Truth and Reconciliation.

๐ŸšŒ Parking Shuttle Changes – Effective July 20

Parking Services has updated shuttle schedules.

Ave C Shuttle

  • Dedicated shuttle service between SCH and Ave C will no longer operate between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • During these hours, please use the inter-facility shuttle and let the driver know you'd like to stop at Ave C.

Lot 15 Shuttle

  • An additional shuttle has been added during peak times:
    • 6:00–9:00 a.m.
    • 3:00–6:00 p.m.

Please review the updated shuttle schedules on the Parking Services intranet.

๐Ÿ”„ Flow Coordinator Reminder

Our coordinator continues to play an important role in supporting complex patient discharges.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating patient and family education
  • Organizing discharge plans
  • Arranging equipment and supplies
  • Coordinating follow-up appointments
  • Supporting safe transitions home

NG (Nasogastric) Feeding Education Update

The Flow Coordinator will initiate NG feeding education Monday through Friday and will provide families with the new PIER (Patient Information and Education Resource) booklet, along with the necessary supplies and prescriptions.

What families will be taught:

  • ✔️ How to perform placement checks
  • ✔️ Feeding schedules
  • ✔️ Pump setup and takedown
  • ✔️ Hands-on practice using the simulation doll
  • ✔️ What to expect throughout the teaching process and a schedule for learning

Working Together

The Flow Coordinator and bedside nursing staff will continue to work closely to ensure families receive consistent education.

Please remember:

  • Do not delay the initial NG teaching if a patient is admitted on an evening or weekend.
  • Continue reinforcing education for patients with more complex discharge needs.
  • For straightforward cases, NG insertions will transition back to bedside nursing once teaching has been initiated.

๐Ÿ“˜ PIER Resource

PIER (Patient Information and Education Resource) has been developed specifically for our NG-fed patients. This comprehensive booklet replaces our previous teaching document.

Krista will print and review the booklet with families during weekday teaching. If you require a copy on evenings or weekends, it is available on the S: drive.

๐Ÿ’ก Helpful Reminders

Nickie Doll NG Teaching

Using water-based lubricant with the 8 FR NG tube makes insertion into the teaching doll much easier.

Pyxis Reminder

When using the "Patient Specific Fridge Medication" override, please ensure you are only removing medications that are labelled specifically for your patient.  If you are removing an epidural from the fridge – remove the med under your patients name rather than choosing “fridge med”

Collodion Remover

Need collodion remover after hours? You'll find a bottle in the unit 2 medication room. Let the tech's know when the bottle is out so they can replace.

 Kelly & Sharon

Breastmilk & EBM Storage Guidelines has been updated. The q-card box version will be available next week in the boxes. It is currently available on the S-Drive in a new folder "Breastmilk EBM & Breast Pump". It has links to the original SHA document and the Clinical Procedures.
